AN Introduction

Mahayana Buddhist Temple, located in South Cairo, New York, is the retreat of the Eastern States Buddhist Temple of America, Inc., the oldest Chinese Buddhist temple on the eastern coast of the United States. The Eastern States Buddhist Temple was founded by Mr. James Ying and Mrs. Annie Ying in 1962. The Mahayana Temple in South Cairo was dedicated in 1971; and the Mahayana Temple in New York was dedicated in 1997. All the Temples have had a venerable history of providing service to our parishioners and to the general public.

Recently, due to the growing ageing overseas Chinese population in the tri-state area, we have been receiving an increase in requests that we establish a columbarium at Mahayana Temple in South Cairo.

After careful studies, the Board of Directors has decided to honor such requests and to proceed with the designing and construction of such a columbarium complex. The whole process would, however, take years to complete.

In order to satisfy the immediate needs and the current requests, the Board has authorized the renovation of our Dee Zhang Temple. As such the renovated temple will include a columbarium space.

The Eastern States Buddhist Temple and the Mahayana Temples are pleased to share our plans and display our artist’s renderings with you.

Thank you so much for being our parishioners over the years. May Buddha bless each and every one of you and your families.
